GARDENS WITH NO FLOWERS
May 20, 2017
Freedom Park Interpretive Center, 10:00 a.m., open to the public. Helen Hamilton, retired high school biology teacher, Master Gardener and John Clayton Native Plant Society member, will suggest some plants that deer won’t eat -- ferns for a shade garden and mosses on pathways and in little gardens. In sunny areas, ornamental grasses add interesting shapes and colors to traditional perennial beds, and the shorter sedges can be placed in front of taller blooming plants. These plants grow wild in much of Virginia, don’t need much care, and are not interesting to deer and rabbits. Most nurseries and garden centers offer many varieties of these alternative plants that add much interest to home landscapes. This event is part of the Learn and Grow Educational Series sponsored by the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. The program is free, although a $5.00 donation to help the Garden grow is appreciated. For more information, contact Helen by email at helen48@cox.net
After the program, Master Gardeners will be in the Garden to answer questions and talk about what is in bloom.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Ongoing
National Historical Park (consisting of the National Park Service at Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield) continues its mission, preserving and protecting the interests of the public since 1930. The Park operates two visitor centers and several historic homes. However, like all national parks, Colonial relies heavily on volunteers. Perhaps a sign of the times, but volunteerism is not as prevalent as it once was. But, you have a chance to change that trend at Colonial. A need exists for regular volunteers four hours a day, one day a week, orienting visitors to the park and the area. We also need volunteers to conduct tours for the public and operate historic homes. There is something for everyone. So, consider becoming a steward of your wonderful national parks, and begin at Colonial National Historical Park, (Historic Jamestowne or Yorktown Battlefield) by contacting Mike Byrd at 757-898-2422. Come make a difference!

NEW WATA BUS ROUTE SERVES JAMESTOWN AREA
Ongoing
The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) will begin a new pilot route serving the Jamestown area. The new route is funded through Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grants. The Jamestown route will serve the most densely populated area of James City County that until now has not been served by public transportation. The route will provide citizens and visitors access to public transportation in an area with several neighborhoods, schools, businesses, medical facilities, shopping, time share communities, churches, and the Jamestown Settlement. The new route will provide 15-hours of daily service (6 am – 9 pm), Monday through Friday starting at the Williamsburg Crossing Shopping Center, on the side of Food Lion. It will travel along Rt. 199 to Jamestown Rd., Greensprings Rd., John Tyler Hwy., and back to Jamestown Rd. Transfers can be made at the Williamsburg Shopping Center to the Red Line taking you to the Williamsburg Transportation Center accessing all other routes. “We are in the business of connecting people and being able to reach this part of the County now is very exciting for us,” said Kevan Danker, Executive Director of WATA. “This new route allows us to serve a wider range of customers and once they board a WATA bus they have access to our entire system of routes throughout the Greater Williamsburg area.” The route will be evaluated over three years to determine if it can be continued based on ridership and availability of funds. Fares on the Jamestown route will be free through February. Starting March 1st fares will be $1.25 per trip, $2 all day or select one of our many additional passes. Passengers that transfer onto Jamestown from another WATA route through February 6 will receive a voucher for an all-day pass.
