This Williamsburg Regional Library film series brings art house film flavor to your Tuesdays. Plus, meet new friends, hear from special guests who are film experts, enjoy light refreshments, and have a discussion after the film.
May 3: The Mole Agent (2020), 2:00-3:30 p.m.
In this Oscar-nominated documentary, a private investigator in Chile hires an 83-year-old man to go undercover in a retirement home whose caretakers are suspected of elder abuse. Spanish with English subtitles. NR
May 10: Cyrano (2021), 2:00-4:10 p.m.
In 17th-century Italy, Cyrano de Bergerac (Peter Dinklage) helps his friend woo the lovely Roxanne (Haley Bennett) despite the fact that he, too, is deeply in love with her. This musical version of Edmond Rostand’s play was directed by Joe Wright. PG-13
May 17: Writing with Fire (2021), 2:00-3:25 p.m.
India’s only newspaper run exclusively by “lower-caste” women takes its risky investigative reporting from a village newsletter to an online, international audience. This documentary, shortlisted for an Oscar, celebrates courageous women and the power of journalism. In Hindi with English subtitles. NR
May 24: Wife of a Spy (2020), 2:00-4:00 p.m.
In Manchuria on the eve of the Second World War, a Japanese woman discovers that her husband may be working against the interests of Imperial Japan and finds herself torn between loyalty to him or her country. This movie was nominated for several international film awards. In Japanese with English subtitles. NR
May 31: Chasing Coral (2017), 2:00-3:30 p.m.
A team of divers and scientists use time-lapse photography to capture the beauty and diversity of coral reefs even as they are perishing in warming oceans. This gorgeous, elegiac look at a threatened ecosystem, directed by Jeff Orlowski (Chasing Ice), won the Documentary Audience Award at Sundance. NR
