The Throwback Thursday Film Series screens a variety of classic and contemporary movies for an adult audience. All films are shown in the Williamsburg Library Theatre.
April’s theme: The Roman Empire
April 6, 2:00-5:15 p.m.: Cleopatra (1963)
Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Rex Harrison star in this opulent epic about Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, and her interludes, romantic and political, with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed the film, which was nominated for 9 Academy Awards. G 3hr 12min
April 13, 2:00-3:40 p.m.: The Last Days of Pompeii (1935)
In the city of Pompeii, a wealthy and corrupt gladiator contends with his son, who is being influenced by the teachings of Jesus Christ, just as Mount Vesuvius begins to rumble ominously. Preston Foster and Basil Rathbone star under the direction of Merian C. Cooper (King Kong). NR 1hr 36min
April 20, 2:00-4:40 p.m.: Gladiator (2000)
A renowned Roman general (Russell Crowe) is betrayed by his scheming emperor (Joaquin Phoenix) and seeks revenge by becoming a gladiator. This terrific and popular action picture was directed by Ridley Scott and won five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Actor. R 2hr 35min
April 27, 2:00-4:00 p.m.: The Eagle (2011)
In 140 AD, a young Roman soldier travels north of Hadrian’s Wall to find out what happened to his father. who disappeared along with Rome’s Ninth Legion several years before. Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, and Donald Sutherland star in this action picture that is loosely based on fact. PG-13 1hr 54min
